How to Use This Deck
This deck shows a series of images and asks students to describe each one in words for someone who isn't looking at it. It can be used as a bell ringer, morning meeting activity, or introduction to a fuller lesson on accessibility.
Image descriptions are written explanations of visual content, used as alt text (what short versions are typically used for) on websites, social media, and anywhere someone who is blind or low-vision needs to access what an image shows. This activity builds that skill.
This activity can be as simple or as deep as you want it to be. The speaker notes offer background on image descriptions, accessibility, and things to look for in student responses. At minimum, put an image on the board, let students write, and mention that this is a real skill used to make content accessible to people who are blind or low-vision.
Ways to use:
Show one image at a time as a quick writing warm-up
Pair with any lesson where students are creating content with images
Partner activity: one student describes, the other writes or rewrites the description without looking
