The latest updates from Disability Equality In Education (DEE) and the Coalition On Disability Inclusive Curriculum

Have you seen the new content on our website?

Over the last few weeks and months, we’ve been adding new lessons and resources, lists of our supporters and clients and updating some of our lists.

New lessons:

We’re working to make sure that we have lessons and resources, including guidance, so that you can find a way to bring Disability Inclusive Curriculum into every subject at every grade level.

Here are some of the new lessons we’ve written:

• Rhyming Lesson based on “Different - A Great Thing to Be” for 1st through 4th grade

• Winnie the Witch - Reading Guide and Lesson Plan that Addresses the Social Model of Disability for Kindergarten through 5th grade

• Analyze a Poem for Theme - DEE the Chickadee for 3rd and 4th grade

• Hephaestus - Greek Mythology for 9th through 12th grade

We’ve also added some lessons created by other organizations including:

• Analyzing Text Structures with "Everyone Can Play" Lesson by CommonLit for 3rd grade

• Calculating the Distance Lesson by Rick Hansen Foundation for 5th, 6th and 7th grades

• Analyzing the Author's Point of View with "I'm a Disabled Teenager, and Social Media Is My Lifeline" Lesson by CommonLit for 8th grade

• Identifying Main Ideas and Central Idea with“College students with disabilities are too often excluded” by CommonLit for 11th grade

We continue to add new content regularly, so check back often and let us know if there’s something in particular you are looking for.

Write Lessons for Us!

As you know, Disability Equality in Education develops and shares free lesson plans and resources for K-12 educators that regularize disability and/or spotlight the rich history of disabled people.

We’re actively looking to grow the team we work with.  

Whether you’re a seasoned educator, new to teaching, or are more of an informal educator, your understanding of the social model of disability and desire to bring disability discussions into classrooms in ways that destigmatize is what matters. 

If you’ve never worked in a classroom, but have ideas —we’ll pair you with experienced teachers to bring your vision to life!

While we have plenty of volunteer opportunities as well, this is a paid, freelance position.  Some educators write a single lesson for us, while others may write multiple a month.

Events we’ve attended

On October 10th, DEE attended the Cities of Inclusion Disability Summit at Lincoln Financial Field. 5 of our Board members were there.

Lisa, Sharon and Stacy took turns speaking with attendees at the table. Lisa was invited by Institute on Disabilities at Temple University and Joe Hohenstein to participate in a panel called “Using Your Voice to Create Positive Change.” She delivered a powerful explanation of the process she went through from the idea of legislation that would bring Disability Inclusive Curriculum into more schools, all the way to the bill’s passage. Watch the entire breakout session titled “Using Your Voice to Create Positive Change.” Lisa is introduced for her section at 19:08, though she introduces herself earlier and answers questions later in the program as well.

DEE attended Disability Pride Philadelphia, on September 7th.

It was great being there to celebrate Pride and connect with friends, new and old. It’s always wonderful spreading the word about Disability Inclusive Curriculum.
